Nature-based Wellbeing Opportunities:

As many businesses, the Heartland Wellbeing Institute has had to adapt with what can be done and what needs to be done during this COVID-19 era.

I miss interacting and being present with you all.  I am in the process of taking  content from Meandering with Nature,  Seasons of Wellbeing on the Prairie and new materials to develop virtual opportunities.

Details to follow in September!

August Pondering

Where has 2020 gone?  My last pondering was right before the pandemic hit the U.S. hard.  I like so many people, hunkered down - a term used in my family that means “do what needs to be done”- and I did what needed to be done.  Found myself going back to what I learned in undergrad - Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.  You start at the bottom, the foundation, of physiological needs – food, water, warmth and rest.  Once those are in place, you move up to safety needs – security and feeling safe.  And that is where I was for a while.

The Heartland Wellbeing Institute  was created from the desire and intention to offer experiences and opportunities that support wellbeing. To make the time to remember who we are, why we are here and what we want to do about it.  To offer practical and simple strategies to engage in what is important to you, what brings you joy and how to incorporate these activities into your daily life.

Is it a walk in nature, listening to the wind swirl through leaves of a tree or learning something new?  Do you enjoy writing, reading, yoga, meditation - and want a community to have creative conversations and experiences?

What is mindfulness at its foundation?  Jon Kabat-Zinn is one of the leading experts and Executive Director of the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.  Dr. Kabat-Zinn's working definition is: "Paying attention on purpose in the present moment as if your life depends on it, non-judgementally."

That is quite a definition and it comes down to intention and awareness in the here and now.   Making choices and actions based on informed and reflective decisions.
